Have You Changed Your Invitation List?

Jamie Warren helps lead the Summit’s Prison Ministry.

Pastor J.D. preached a sermon entitled, “Who’s At Your Party?” on May 1st asking us to examine ourselves to see if we are leveraging our lives for the Kingdom of God or if we are living our lives for ourselves. Is the time and resources we have ours to use for our glory and pleasure or are they His to use for His glory?

The Prison Ministry at The Summit is an amazing and rewarding opportunity for you to invite someone in your life who is hungry for the gospel. We all have fallen short of the glory of God, but none of us, not even those in prison, have fallen too far for Him to reach. We just have to invite them in our lives and let God love them through us.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.” Jeremiah 29:11-14

Join us at 7pm on Tuesday, June 7th in the Bay at Brier Creek to learn about The Summit’s Prison Ministry and the opportunities you have to share the promises of God and the hope He brings.

Cary/Apex Pre-Launch Venue

Meeting Sundays at 9am in the south venue at the Brier Creek Campus!

Why Cary Apex?
We are excited about the new Cary/Apex campus! At The Summit Church one of our values is to plant campuses where we live so we can serve our local communities. We feel it’s best to worship and serve where you live, being the church in that community. Over the last 12 months, we have seen a large number of people who live in the Cary/Apex area attend The Summit. As a result, we have an opportunity to launch a campus in a new area of the Triangle!

Recently, we hired R.J. Hoggard to serve as the campus pastor for Cary/Apex. In 2008, R.J. and his family moved to Apex with hopes of building a business in the Triangle. In his own words, R.J. says, “We can now see that God had other plans.” In 2009, R.J. and his family became members of The Summit. While attending the Summit, R.J. has served in a variety of capacities including small group leader, engaged couples mentor and speaker, VBS leader, and men’s discipleship group leader.

This Sunday, June 5, those people interested in the Cary/Apex campus will begin meeting in the south venue at the Brier Creek Campus at 9 a.m. We have some exciting events planned over the next several weeks. Are you interested in taking the Gospel to a new area of the Triangle? Come join us! This week, you can also come meet R.J. and his wife, Tracy, at a “meet and greet” immediately following the 9am service!

Equip Seminar – June Series

While many of our Summit Small Groups take a short break during the summer, our EQUIP ministry has decided to use this opportunity to offer five summer EQUIP seminars. Starting Sunday June 5th, the EQUIP ministry of the Summit is offering some top-notch instruction.  Gifted teachers from Southeastern Seminary and the Summit Staff will provide training in areas of needed growth for our church.  From counseling to applied theology to evangelism training, the sessions this summer will be formative and set good direction for our personal ministry.

Our first seminar will be called One Gospel, Two Struggles: Facing Sin and Suffering, and will be held on Sunday June 5th, from 6-8 PM in the Bay. Brad Hambrick, our new counseling ministry head, will give us some practical training in helping people walk through the difficult circumstances in life. People are often good at applying the gospel to sin but sometimes struggle in trying to understand how the gospel applies to suffering. This will be a great opportunity, don’t miss it!

Kids Week

Matt Allison is the Summit’s Route 56 Kids’ Director

It’s that time again… Kids Week is back!

Kids Week is the Summit’s annual time to focus on kids and connect them to the Gospel and to their communities.  Join us for an action packed kids week of worship, discipleship, prayer, service, food and fun!

Last year was our first ever multisite Kids Week with over 250 kids learning about God’s Word and worshiping their King Jesus.   We saw kids give their lives to Christ, bless an orphanage in India with over $2400 given through penny wars (that the girls LOST!), and kids bring their parents to an awesome bouncy house filled family fun night!  Last year’s Kids Week was incredible and this year’s will be even better!

With two locations, West Club in the morning and Brier Creek at night, this year’s Kids Week will focus on what it means to put your faith into motion and JUMP into action!  Kids Week registration is FREE and is a great opportunity to bring your kids, their friends, and kids in the neighborhood.

Who: Kids: Ages 3 years and potty trained- 4th Grade

Volunteers:  5th Grade and up

Neal Middle School

Brier Creek Saturday has a long standing relationship with Neal Middle School. We have been involved with tutoring at Neal, ServeRDU projects, raising money to help their students take a school trip to Washington, D.C., and the Neal Store. Once again as a campus, we have an opportunity to love our neighbor and show the love of Christ to Neal Middle School.

What is the Neal Store?

The Neal Store, which happens only a couple times a year, is a free used clothing store that we set up in the Neal school cafeteria. Entire families from the Neal community are welcome to come in and shop for free.

How can you volunteer?

Join us as we sort and size clothing this coming Thursday evening, May 26 and next Tuesday evening, May 31. We will be working in suite 114 in the BC South building. We will have the doors open from 5:30 to 9:00 both nights. If you can’t get there right at 5:30, just come as soon as you can—and bring any friends who might like to help!

Come serve alongside us on the day of the store, Saturday, June 4! The work day for Summit volunteers begins at 7am and ends around 2:00, but if even if you could only serve part of that day it would help! We will be meeting at BC South (Suite 114) at 7a.m. to pack all the clothing into vehicles and transport it all to the school. Once the store is open volunteers are encouraged to mingle with the shoppers, help them find stuff, play with the children, and have conversations. Or if you would prefer, volunteers can also leave the store and come back later at around 12:30, when we’ll box up all the leftover clothing, take down the clothing racks, and transport it all back to BC South 114. Definitely our two busiest times (when we need the most help) will be Saturday at 7a.m. through the end of setting up the store; and then again at around 12:30p.m. for boxing up leftovers and transporting them back to BC South 114.

If you could volunteer please email Jodi Jackson at timandjody.jackson@frontier.com.

Businessmen’s Group

Eric Chetwood is one of the Summit’s directional elders.

If you are a businessman in the RDU area, then you have a lot to be excited about these days. Your backyard has been repeatedly ranked by multiple periodicals as one of the most attractive areas for commerce in the entire United States. RDU has exciting technology, groundbreaking science, and a pipeline of talent from local universities that is second to none. This marketplace is ripe with commercial opportunity and that is very exciting indeed…but what is all of that worth without the gospel?

As businessmen, we have an opportunity to take the good news of Jesus Christ into areas that are far from him, to people who are far from Him. Many of our colleagues and clients are hurting severely because they do not know about the free gift in Jesus that has been offered to them. They are chasing vapors. What if God wanted to redeem the marketplace through us?

Five years ago, a small group of businessmen in the Triangle started getting together on the third Thursday of every month. Their goal was to encourage each other through the challenges and successes of honoring God in their own respective areas of business. They wanted to sharpen each other, speak strength into each other, and spur each other on to believe that the good news of Jesus can transform lives through business.

We chose Proverbs 27:17 as the foundational verse of this group: “Just as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” You have probably heard that verse before, but I want to challenge you to think about the imagery for a moment. Being sharpened is not always a comfortable process. It chisels away parts of us that are dull, and sometimes sparks fly…but it is for our good. It makes us more effective as we pursue the purpose for which we were created.

So what is the point of this post? If you are a businessman, I want to invite you to come join us and be sharpened on the third Thursday of every month. All of us face triumphs and challenges in our businesses, and it is helpful to have other businessmen to turn to for gospel-centered wisdom and encouragement.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, May 19th, from 8:00-9:30am at the Summit Church 2335 Presidential Drive, Durham, North Carolina 27703. We will meet in Suite 111, as we do on the third Thursday of every month. We will have coffee at 8:00am and the meeting will start promptly at 8:15am. J.D. Greear, lead pastor at the Summit Church, will be leading our time together. We hope many different churches will be represented. Feel free to bring folks with you – it should be a great investment of time. http://www.SummitRDU.com/business

It’s Your Turn

This past weekend, our Student Pastor Jason Gaston challenged each of us to be a part of the discipleship process to the next generation. (If you missed this sermon, be sure to check it out here.) We have several different opportunities for you here at the Summit to help us in accomplishing the mission of reaching the largest generation in our history!

Opportunities include working with our Summit Kids ministry (weekend services, AWANAS, Route 56, Kids Week) and our Summit Student Ministry (middle and high school small groups, Elevate). The task is big, and it’s urgent. There’s no better day than today. It’s your turn. If you’d like to jump on board then take a moment to fill out this quick form.
