Overcoming Anger Seminar: Family Devotion
Jun 17th
One of the desires of The Summit Counseling ministry is to be a part of the “normal” church life. We do not want to be a church with a counseling ministry (read “on the side; just for crisis cases”). We want to be a church that uses our counseling ministry to EQUIP our members to counsel one another and our community.
We have put a great deal of time, energy, and conversation into designing the counseling ministry to strengthen existing ministries or core values of our church. This is something we are passionate about and want to continue to refine.
There are several ways that we have sought to accomplish this:
- Each counseling initiative is designed to lead participants into a small group
- The focal point of change in each counseling initiative is the Gospel
- Counseling seminars are written and recorded to be available as small group studies
There is another core value the counseling EQUIP seminars want to strengthen – parents are the primary discipler of their children. Part of discipling our children is teaching them how to handle their anger, anxiety, conflict, grief, etc… in biblical ways. For this reason, each counseling EQUIP seminar will have an appendix that applies the material covered at a child’s level and in a family devotion format.
The following sample is taken from the second point of the upcoming “Overcoming Anger” seminar.
Devotion for Luke 6:43-45. Give your children a visual of the key teaching in this passage. Take a glass of water and shake it. When water comes out, ask, “Why did water come out of the glass?” Most likely they will answer, “Because you shook it.” Kindly say, “No,” and repeat the question emphasizing the word water. After a couple tries tell them, “Water came out of the glass because water was in the glass. If it were a glass of milk and I shook it milk would have come out.”
Our hearts are like that glass. When life shakes us the content of our heart is revealed. We cannot blame our sinful actions on the things that happen outside of us. “You cannot blame your brother taking your toy as why you hit him anymore than I should blame your disobedience for why I yell at you. In those situations you wanted to enjoy the toy more than to love your brother and I let my desire for a peaceful evening override my responsibility to honor you.”
Use this conversation as another opportunity to present the Gospel to your child. Christ comes to change hearts. He wants to keep their hearts and minds healthy. Only Jesus can change our hearts. Talk about how you still need the Gospel even as a Christian parent.
Follow Up Study: The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones – “God Sends Help” starting on page 326.
We hope to see a large number of our parents at this event and pray that God will use it to strengthen our families.

Orphan Care Ministry
Jun 16th
Over the past year, God has worked in huge ways at Summit to raise up families to care for orphans locally as well as around the world. We’ve seen dozens of families committing to adopt or foster children, and we’ve seen the Adoption Fund at Summit grow!
We’re excited about our upcoming church wide Summit Orphan Care Meeting, taking place at the Brier Creek Campus, the Bay, on June 28 from 7:00 – 8:30PM. Here, we’ll have members of our church sharing their stories and talking about specific ways you can be involved, along with other local community resources. Furthermore, we will give an overall update on the Orphan Care Ministry about what to look for in the coming months, and give you some resources about how anyone can be involved in caring for orphans in our community, even if you are not in a place to adopt or foster personally. Childcare is available for this meeting, so make sure you RSVP.
Also, we’re excited to announce an opportunity to give to the Summit Adoption Fund, which helps Summit members with the enormous finances of adopting, and have your gift matched by an anonymous matching donor, who will be giving up to $2500! For more details, please visit us on our website, follow us on Twitter and Facebook, or email us directly.

Cary / Apex: The Buzz Continues
Jun 7th
Cary/Apex Pre-Launch venue. Meeting Sundays at 9am in the south venue at the Brier Creek Campus! He are some thoughts from a small group leader in Cary about his excitement about this new campus!
My wife Katie and I are extremely excited about the Cary/Apex campus launch. This is something we have been hoping and praying for for 2 years! When wefirst joined the Summit, we were in a small group that met in North Durham. As much as we loved that group, we found it difficult to fully get behind any service or outreach opportunities because they were all 25-30 min away fromwhere we lived. We completely supported the vision, and helped as much as we could, however, it was more difficult for us to build long-term relationships because of the distance.
A couple of years ago when we first talked with the Small Groups Pastor about planting a small group, he immediately said, “We really need some groups around this area” (circling the Cary/Morrisville area where we live), and initially, he had no idea that we lived in that area! We were not aware of the huge need in that area for small groups! Over the past few years, God has been moving tremendously in Cary/Apex, and we have seen many new small groups start up, and the outreach from these groups is starting to affect this area of the Triangle.
With the growing number of people from this area attending Summit, we found it more difficult to invite those whom we were serving to come to the Brier Creek campus, again due to the distance. At times, some were willing, but the drive was definitely prohibitive for them. Now, with the Cary/Apex campus so close, we’ll be able to serve and attend in the same area! We are so excited because so many more doors will be opened to invite neighbors and friends that would otherwise be unwilling to come! We have a heart for this area of RDU because this is where we live, and we want to see the Gospel spread to those around us!
We look forward to the upcoming Cary/Apex launch and the part we can play in it. I am excited to see how God will choose to use this campus to further His kingdom. We are pumped!

Have You Changed Your Invitation List?
Jun 4th
Jamie Warren helps lead the Summit’s Prison Ministry.
Pastor J.D. preached a sermon entitled, “Who’s At Your Party?” on May 1st asking us to examine ourselves to see if we are leveraging our lives for the Kingdom of God or if we are living our lives for ourselves. Is the time and resources we have ours to use for our glory and pleasure or are they His to use for His glory?
The Prison Ministry at The Summit is an amazing and rewarding opportunity for you to invite someone in your life who is hungry for the gospel. We all have fallen short of the glory of God, but none of us, not even those in prison, have fallen too far for Him to reach. We just have to invite them in our lives and let God love them through us.
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.” Jeremiah 29:11-14
Join us at 7pm on Tuesday, June 7th in the Bay at Brier Creek to learn about The Summit’s Prison Ministry and the opportunities you have to share the promises of God and the hope He brings.
Cary/Apex Pre-Launch Venue
Jun 2nd
Meeting Sundays at 9am in the south venue at the Brier Creek Campus!
Why Cary Apex?
We are excited about the new Cary/Apex campus! At The Summit Church one of our values is to plant campuses where we live so we can serve our local communities. We feel it’s best to worship and serve where you live, being the church in that community. Over the last 12 months, we have seen a large number of people who live in the Cary/Apex area attend The Summit. As a result, we have an opportunity to launch a campus in a new area of the Triangle!
Recently, we hired R.J. Hoggard to serve as the campus pastor for Cary/Apex. In 2008, R.J. and his family moved to Apex with hopes of building a business in the Triangle. In his own words, R.J. says, “We can now see that God had other plans.” In 2009, R.J. and his family became members of The Summit. While attending the Summit, R.J. has served in a variety of capacities including small group leader, engaged couples mentor and speaker, VBS leader, and men’s discipleship group leader.
This Sunday, June 5, those people interested in the Cary/Apex campus will begin meeting in the south venue at the Brier Creek Campus at 9 a.m. We have some exciting events planned over the next several weeks. Are you interested in taking the Gospel to a new area of the Triangle? Come join us! This week, you can also come meet R.J. and his wife, Tracy, at a “meet and greet” immediately following the 9am service!
