Say Hi to Omar!
Feb 24th
For the last several weeks we’ve been talking about our new Brier Creek South Venue, scheduled to open in the next few weeks. Omar King is our BC South Venue Pastor, and we want you to know all about him…
Omar was born and raised in Queens, NY. He and his family moved to Raleigh in 1991, where he attended and graduated from Millbrook High School. He received his undergrad from UNC Charlotte in 1999, and went on to teach in Wake County Public Schools for three years as a Special Programs teacher.
In December of last year, Omar received his MDiv in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Seminary. He’s been a huge help to our counseling ministry here at the Summit.
Some other cool facts: Omar has worked as a personal trainer (he can bench press you), he’s a killer table tennis player (nobody on our staff can touch him), he’s a martial arts fanatic (insert your own Jackie Chan joke here), and he’s a Marvel & DC Comics fan.
Omar and his wife LaToya have attended the Summit for the last couple of years. They were integral in our North Raleigh campus launch, and now they’ve come back “home” to Brier Creek. LaToya works for the Make it Right Foundation, a local non-profit that builds affordable housing for New Orleans’ 9th Ward in the wake of Katrina. They love hanging out with their niece Klohee.
The King’s heart is for young married and newly engaged couples. Their desire is to build friendships and make connections throughout the Summit!
We are all very excited to have Omar on our team. If you’d like to be on his BC South team, email him today. Don’t make him come after you. He’s way too strong for you.

Vision Church Basketball Tourney
Feb 18th
Hey Summit! We have a great opportunity in our own back yard. Vision Church, a church we helped plant in the South Raleigh area, is starting a new ministry for the community. On March 11-12 there will be a 3 on 3 basketball tournament at Grand Slam USA of Raleigh. Friday night March 11 from 5:00pm-9:00pm will consist of round robin play. The tournament will be held Saturday March 12th from 11:00am-3:00pm. The cost to participate is $60 for a 4 person team. We are excited to partner with Vision to help make this tournament a success.
In order to make this event the best it can be we need your help with a few things:
· Most importantly we need teams to register. Sign up online at http://www.visionchurchrdu.org/
· We need volunteers to work the registration table, keep score, and referee. If you are interested in helping at any point during the event, please contact Clayton Greene at jcgreene21@gmail.com
· If you are unable to play, but would still like to contribute to the event, donations are welcome. For example, you can sponsor a team of students or other participants by paying the team’s entry fee.
Attention College Students
Feb 16th
As a college student, do you ever feel disconnected from the local church? Do you ever feel like you come every week and yet don’t really know anyone besides the friends you came with? It’s a common problem that many college students experience and one that Brier Creek Saturday is dedicated to eliminating.
And here’s one way we’re doing that. On Saturday night, February 26th immediately following the second service we will be hosting a college event with food and music. Come hear our own Jonathan Edwards and a few of his friends play some throw back tunes from the 90’s. It is guaranteed to be an entertaining time.
More importantly though, this will be a time that you can connect with other college students as well as many of the leaders who keep Brier Creek Saturday afloat. We will have opportunities there for you to sign up for small groups, ministry teams, and anything else you might be interested in. Bottom line – if you feel disconnected this is your chance to get plugged into the Summit family.
For more info see the College Connect table on Saturday night. We look forward to seeing you there!

Weekend Remix
Feb 7th
Announcement touchdown! Here’s an instant replay of what you missed this weekend:
- Student Small Groups. They’re happening now for our middle schoolers (7th & 8th graders) on Sunday mornings at 9 AM in Studio 712. Parents, this is a great opportunity for you to serve, your student to attend an on-campus group, and your entire family to worship together at 11:00. More info.
- Starting Point. It’s our monthly connection event for folks who want to know more about the Summit. Missed it yesterday? You can catch all three parts of the process this weekend after the Saturday campus 6:00 service. If you’re an AM’er, catch up on March 6th after the 9 & 11. More info.
- BC South. Our new venue launches in the next few weeks! Yesterday we introduced our venue pastor, Omar King, who will be leading the charge in this missional advance to open more seats in the auditorium. BC South will launch with a 9 & 11 service. The venue will seat 400+ people and will be led in worship by Matt Papa. Want to know more? Email Omar, and watch the blog later this week to get to know him better!
City Project Reflection
Feb 4th
Whitney was a member of last summer’s institute (now called the City Project). For more information on the City Project and how you can apply, visit thecityproject.summitrdu.com. Applications are due to the Summit office by Feb 7th!
As I sit down to reflect on my experience in the Institute (now City Project) I realize how difficult it is to summarize what I encountered and learned to value in a short blog post. Simply put, the Institute provided many of the people, events, and opportunities that were the catalyst for my spiritual growth and understanding. My primary intention when applying for the Institute, as cliché as this may sound, was exceeded. I was originally seeking Biblical knowledge where I thought I was lacking, as well as experience with mission trips. I was excited about spending the summer with 21 other college students, taking classes, going on stateside and overseas mission trips, and of course working for a Summit ministry. What I received was much more.
Our mornings were spent in various seminary classes, and our afternoons were more or less spent working within the church. The seminary classes coupled with scripture memorization and required reading proved to be less about application and more an understanding of the reverence we should all maintain for Scripture. I learned to see the gospel in a more complete manner. Working at the Summit taught me about the importance of the church and our service in it. I went into the summer fearful that I had little to provide because of my “elementary” understanding of the Bible. However, I learned how beautiful God’s design was in the Church Body– that WE ALL play a vital role.
The fellowship with the 21 other Instituters and the pastor I worked directly with were more beneficial than I ever anticipated. It’s interesting how much you can grow and learn through others’ experiences, gifts, and thoughts. I enjoyed listening to students that came from different campus ministries and different backgrounds, and let’s be real, after 24 hours on a plane to Malaysia, you get to know people really well!
In summary what I learned: a genuine relationship with Christ doesn’t come from simply taking seminary classes. A genuine joy for sharing the gospel doesn’t come from being told how to share the gospel or even by being on an overseas mission trip faced with a multitude of lost people. What I learned was that everything I had been praying for (more Biblical knowledge and a desire to share God’s gift with the nations) was simply answered by being compelled by Christ to love and obey. The Holy Spirit already provided the understanding I was seeking. I certainly learned disciplines this summer that I am still working on, but the disciplines themselves are not what it means to be a Christian. Rather, they are the tools we have been given to help us carry our cross and follow Christ. “To live is Christ” and we are called Christians because we are to live like our Savior from the inside out.
